EMERGENCY FOOD DRIVE - Our grocery cart is waiting to be filled up again. We are collecting canned food and non-perishable items for Mision Peniel in Immokalee. The freeze in January impacted the farm workers immensely. Over 80% of the crops were destroyed. The very poorest people have had no work since early January, so bring your food and help us fill our grocery cart several times over.

We will continue our emergency food drive until Sunday, May 23rd. Then we will take it to the Mision Peniel in Immokalee. Thank you for your generous support.

YOUTH GROUP - Wow, I can't believe summer is over so soon. The youth continued to meet on Sunday and Wednesday during the summer. On Sunday, we have been learning about the New Testament. On Wednesday, continued to discuss the book that is giving us pointers on how to lead a Christian life as a teenager. We have had some very deep discussions.

In the month of June we had a car wash that was very successful. Thank you to those who stopped by. The youth also led the service on Youth Sunday. The Youth group enjoyed presenting their form of worship.

In the month of July the youth group fulfilled their obligations for the auctions. There was a lot of work and laughter that was encountered. If there is anyone who would still like their service completed, please let me know. Our sincere thanks to all who participated.

For the month of August, the Youth group had a great time during VBS. They sang a wonderful song at the closing program. The Youth also went to Cedarkirk, the Presbyterian Church Camp, for a week-end retreat. A GREAT time was had by the six youth and two adults who participated.

The Youth group wants to start fundraising earlier this year so they can return to Cedarkirk next summer for a week. Be looking for their activities and if you would like to get involved, let us know.

Monica Drew, Youth Group Leader

CARILLON REPORT - The computerized portion of the church's Carillon (bells/chime system) is no longer functional. A representative of the company that installed the system assessed what it will take to make it operational again. He attached another computerized controller to our amplifier and speaker and it played as designed. The cost of that controller is $4,995.00.

The Session decided to wait about going forward with restoring the system in light of the fact that we still do not have a final figure on what replacing the stolen air conditioners will cost us. If anyone wishes to make an additional contribution directed toward this project, it will be held toward it until the remaining funds are available for restoration.

CALL FOR CREATIVITY -
The Worship and Music Committee has the responsibility for creating a worshipful atmosphere at Buckingham Presbyterian Church not only at Christmas and Easter, but throughout the Liturgical church year. Although those of the committee love their jobs, they are too few to carry out their plans for the church year. It would not be necessary to attend night meetings to be in charge of seeing that the appropriate flower arrangements are provided for special times of the year. The Committee has signed up for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Easter and other special days. When we can, many of us enjoy doing these "one time" arrangements, but we need a coordinator to involve others who would be creative for the Lord.

Anyone who is interested, please call the church office.

NEEDED:
Due to economic downturn, human need in our community is very great and supplies at local food pantries have been dangerously low. During the months of August and September, we are asking those who are able to please bring a can of food or a bag of rice or beans to church with them on Sundays. Our contributions will be taken to the Soup Kitchen on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. for their pantry. As Jesus said, "I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest
they faint on the way." Matthew 15:32. Thank you for your help with this ministry.

EARLY WORSHIP SERVICE -
Worship service at 8:30 a.m. The music for this service will range from "monastic" to "contemporary" and some styles in between. We will celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord's supper weekly, modeling the ancient church worship practices. Some refer to this worship style as "emergent" and some call it "ancient-future." Whatever you call it, God will be honored and praised! See Flyer

NOTE: Please do not leave any valuables inside your car during worship, as there has been a rash of thefts in church parking lots during worship in Lee County.

SPECIAL NEEDS? -
While making hurricane preparations, if you think you need special assistance, we have forms in the church office which can be completed and submitted to Lee County Emergency Management office. Please do not wait until the last minute to get the form to insure you will have the assistance needed if necessary.

WORSHIP & MUSIC INTINCTION -
We celebrated this Sacrament of the Lord's Supper by intinction in April as well as Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve. Recently a few of our worshipers asked a member of the Worship & Music Committee the meaning of "antiquation." The response to this celebration is favorable which is part of the reason why people want to understand more about it.

The word "intinction" comes from the Latin word intinctus which simply means "to dip in." The celebration of the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper by intinction is the dipping of the bread into the wine so both elements of the sacrament may be consumed simultaneously. In first century Israel, it was a common practice to dip bread at a meal like the one when Jesus instituted the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper.

The Session decided that we will celebrate the Lord's Supper in worship by intinction at least quarterly and continuing to distribute the bread and cups to worshipers in their seats other months. A benefit of celebration by intinction is the emphasis that we choose to come to Christ when we come to the Table. A benefit of celebration in our seats is the emphasis on serving one another. The earliest (Presbyterian) method for Communion was for the people to approach the Lord's Table to receive...." (Companion to the Book of Common Worship, p.38)

JOIN THE CHANCEL GUILD - The Chancel Guild members are a team of volunteers that prepare the Sanctuary each Sunday for Service. Some of the duties include changing the paraments (colors) on the altar, pulpit, etc. when appropriate, filling the candles with oil, and preparing and removing the Communion Service. Most Sunday mornings, the duties will only take a few minutes. This is a great way to meet new friends while giving your time to the church! Please call the church office for more details.

SUNDAY BULLETINS are now available in large print. All bulletins can now be recycled. If you don't take your bulletin home, please place it in the recycle container in the Narthex.

NOTE: A copy of the music that's on the screen will be in back on the table if you would like to have one.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS -
Dear Friends in Christ: We come again asking for your help with the church grounds. If some day other than Thursday will suit you better, fine. Perhaps rather than working all over the grounds, just a section, large or small is what you would like. It's up to you. You could take care of just a section of one of our hedges at anytime you feel like working for the Lord. How about the flag pole - or part or all of the palm trees? They need trimming now. Friends, there are so few of us, and we all are old or soon will be, so it's time (at least we think so) to ask for some willing helpers. God Bless You. MATTHEW 9:37 "Then He said to His disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful, but he workers are few.'"
